HSE (South) Press Release, 27/08/2007

"Building workers in the south of the country are to receive free sexual information packs including two condoms. The Health Service Executive (HSE) South is distributing the kit after research it is publishing shows low levels of awareness of sexual health services available to men. Diabetes Epidemic in Ireland. New SELFCheck Blood Glucose Level Test. In 2006 an estimated 200,000 adults resident in Ireland had (diagnosed or undiagnosed) diabetes. Further, an estimated 50% of those who have the condition are unaware of it. Obesity, one of the main contributing factors, is on the increase in Ireland. 47% of the Irish population is overweight, with 13% classified as obese. In addition, the Irish population is aging. The increasing number of those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is placing a significant burden on the health service budget, costing the Irish Government an estimated €580m per annum ... (continued)

Press release 12/04/2007. Survey of 2,000 People

An extensive survey of 2,000 people has been conducted by Pasante Healthcare Ltd in UK. Pasante Healthcare Ltd recently introduced the SELFCheck range of personal health screening tests to the Irish market. The survey reveals that people are increasingly reluctant to visit their GP with 71% (nearly three quarters of us) admitting they avoid going to the doctor unless absolutely necessary. 16% said they ignore problems until they get worse and worryingly 4% (and 7% of men) claim they never go to the doctors at all. The survey further found that 55% blame this reluctance on not thinking they are ill enough. 52% cited a desire to not want to waste the doctor’s time whilst 47% blamed difficulty in finding the time for an appointment.
